Educators today take on the responsibility of meeting the diverse needs of students with disabilities, and they rely on the Individualized Education Program (IEP) to guide and support that work. The IEP is a legally required plan that outlines how schools will help students reach their academic and functional goals. It includes specific services, measurable goals, and necessary accommodations or modifications to ensure students fully engage with the curriculum. By understanding key IEP components, such as present levels of performance, specific goals, and the distinction between accommodations and modifications, educators and parents can collaborate to provide the individualized support students need to succeed. This course takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.
By the end of this module, participants will be able to:
-
Describe the purpose and essential components of an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
-
Recognize the roles and responsibilities of IEP team members, including the general education teacher.
-
Evaluate and support implementing high-quality IEP goals and services in inclusive classroom settings.
