Have you ever been short-staffed in a classroom? Had a substitute teacher or paraprofessional ask you what to do? Or, had staff members ask about their responsibilities throughout the day? If so, implementing a clear zoning plan alongside a master schedule may be a solution! Zoning and master scheduling work together to establish structure, define staff roles, and provide consistency. They help reduce confusion during transitions, minimize downtime, and ensure that students remain actively engaged throughout the day. These tools are essential for maintaining a smooth classroom environment, even in the face of staff absences or changing student needs.

The learning objectives of this module include describing classroom zoning and master schedules, and explaining the rationale for use in your classroom. Participants will learn when and how to implement zoning plans and master schedules, including strategies for assigning staff to zones and developing routines that support student learning. The module will explore how zoning promotes engagement, supports skill generalization, clarifies staff responsibilities, and improves team collaboration.
